If the teeth are not brushed well, the acids accumulated in the mouth damage the enamel layer of the teeth and begin to rot them. In this case, if the teeth are not treated, the living nerve (pulp) part of the decayed tooth is determined and the decayed tooth begins to suffer from severe night pain and unstoppable pain. Filling of root canals is called root canal treatment. It takes about 4 years for a tooth to go to root canal treatment. During this period, the fillings that have been overlooked or not done in any way cause excessive decay in the teeth, causing loss of substance in the teeth, reaching the nerve of the decayed tooth, and they need root canal treatment in the teeth. The root forms of the teeth are not always straight and reachable, and sometimes they can be extremely curved and inaccessible, in this case, the teeth may not be able to be root canal treatment and the extraction of the teeth may result. If we do not want these situations, we should simply brush our teeth twice a day and not neglect the dentist’s check at least once a year.

Endodontics and endodontic treatments are procedures related to the treatment of the root canals of the teeth. Endodontics is also known as root canal treatment. In cases where the living tissue of the teeth, namely the pulp, is damaged and cannot repair itself, root canal treatment (Endodontics) treatment is performed. The pulp (tooth pulp) has shaping, nourishing and protective functions surrounded by dentin located in the cavities of the root and crown of the tooth. Broken teeth and deep caries cause inflammation of the pulp. If the inflamed pulp is not removed, it causes infection in the teeth and tissues around the tooth, severe unbearable pain, and if not treated, it even leads to tooth loss. In endodontic treatment, the root canal is removed, cleaned, disinfected, and completely filled up to the root tip, and the endodontic treatment is completed.

The symptoms in teeth requiring root canal treatment (endodontics) are as follows;

  • Tingling and tenderness with hot or cold food or drink
  • Pain that does not sleep at night
  • Pulsating pain
  • Pain sensation while chewing
  • Swelling in the tooth area
  • Excessive discoloration between the involved tooth and other teeth
  • Presence of severe caries in the tooth
  • Pain when you touch and bite
  • Broken tooth

Before a diagnosis is made for root canal treatment or endodontics, some tests are performed. A hot and cold object is placed on the tooth (vitality test), the tooth is tapped lightly with a hard roux instrument (percussion), and the surrounding tissues of the tooth are pressed lightly (palpation). After these examinations, an x-ray of the tooth is taken. Depending on the condition of the tooth, an electrical vitality test can be applied. Thus, the health status of the pulp is determined. After the necessary determinations, the treatment process with the endodontist (Canal Treatment Specialist) is transferred to the patient and started.

Workflow during Root Canal Treatment (Endodontic Treatment);

  • If the pulp is alive, local anesthesia is provided.
  • Before root canal treatment, radiography is taken and tooth anatomy is determined.
  • If there is caries, it is completely cleaned.
  • Root length is determined with electronic instruments (apex locater).
  • Infected tissues and microorganisms in the root canal are cleaned with rotary instruments.
  • The shaped root canal system is disinfected with some antibacterial solutions.
  • After the control radiographs are taken, the canals are filled with canal filling materials (Gutta-percha and pastes).
  • Finally, the tissue lost in the tooth is reconstructed with restorative materials.

After the root canal treatment (Endodontic) treatment, slight pain may occur in the tooth, but it is for a short time. If you do not use the treated side for a while, the pain will disappear after a short time. The tooth that is applied endodontics (root canal treatment) can serve for a long time like an untreated tooth. If the root canal treated tooth is not cared for, it can rot or break like other teeth. After the root canal treatment is finished, the crown of the tooth is destroyed, the destroyed tooth is not resistant to external vertical and horizontal forces. In this case, if a durable restoration is not made, the teeth may break in the middle from two or various places. For this reason, the most ideal restoration treatment in teeth with root canal treatment is CAD CAM inlay and onlay. In this case, the material losses in the teeth undergoing root canal treatment are eliminated and the teeth are treated in the most ideal way. Classical fillings to be made are less durable than inlay and onlay fillings. It is resistant to possible breakage and impacts. CAD-CAM Inlay and Onlays are better options for keeping the teeth healthy and unbroken for many years.
