METAL PORCELAIN CROWNS (PFM)
Metal Porcelain Crowns are known as PFM restoration (Porcelain Fused to Metal). This type of crown uses a grey color metal base with porcelain fused on top. To place a porcelain fused to metal crown, the natural tooth structure will first need to be reduced in size and shaped so that a dental crown can fit securely over the affected tooth. This crowns usually require two dental appointment. During the first appointment, the tooth will be prepared for the new crowns by thoroughly cleaning it first. Your cosmetic dentist will gently remove the outer layer of teeth for bonding. An impression of your teeth will then be designed and sent to the dental laboratory for complete fabrication. A shade that is chosen will then be made. Your dentist will also place a temporary crown for you to wear between the first and second appointments.Temporary crowns are generally made from acrylic-based materials. During the second appointment, the restoration of your natural teeth will ready. After that, the permanent crown will be checked for size, adjusted as needed and cemented to the tooth permanently.
The outer porcelain shell is extremely aesthetic. Both porcelain and metal are extremely durable dental materials that can withstand the pressure of chewing for long periods of time. If well-taken care of, then can last many years. However, the combination of porcelain and metal causes the crown is thicker and more of the natural tooth structure will need to be removed to allow the dental crown to fit properly. The other consideration is regarding to the metal content. This can be less than ideal for those with metal allergies or sensitivities. Additionally, after your gums recede over time you may see the grey line at your gum line when you smile. For people who clench their teeth, this type of crown may wear down more easily against the opposing teeth because of the metal structure. Metal porcelain crowns are most suitable for use on the side or back teeth and for use over dental implants.
As you can see, porcelain fused to metal crowns have their own advantages over other types of crowns. However, they also have some disadvantages as well. Therefore, it is important to discuss these with your dentist to determine if a porcelain fused to metal crown is right for you.
Note: It is important to remember, the proficiency of the cosmetic dentist is only one aspect of your treatment. The quality of the crowns themselves, combined with the skills of the dental technician is also crucial to ensure a perfect end result.
