E.MAX®️ CROWNS.

The newest type of crown in dentistry is known as e.max®. E-max® is an all-ceramic system that is based on lithium disilicate glass. The crown is usually milled from a single block of ceramic, which makes it very tough and durable. E-max® crown is a prioritized option for aesthetic and resistance. Thanks to its color and easy design with unique structural characteristics. It is a type of all-ceramic crown made of lithium disilicate. Lithium disilicate based e.max® material is used instead of the porcelain in classic method coating. It presents great aesthetics. They look great in your mouth. They can be durable, very strong and a great choice both for front and back teeth. E-max crowns are more translucent compared to zirconium crowns. The ceramic material allows more light to pass through. That’s a major advantage for creating teeth that look as natural as possible. The material is especially ideal for front teeth that are naturally thin and less opaque. Gingiva adaptation is very good. E-max® material does not require any supporting material like in metal or zircon supported porcelain crowns. As each e.max®️ crown is shaped from a single block of lithium disilicate, there is no metal in the crown, which means that you will never see the grey line at your gingival area when you smile, even if your gum line is receding. The metal in metal porcelain crowns can become visible when the gum line recedes with aging. This doesn’t occur with e.max® crowns. Furthermore, it requires less tooth preparation compared to some other types. The only downside of e.max® crowns is it’s higher cost. However, it is more than worth it to spend extra.

E.max®️ crowns can be produced either “PRESS” or “CAD-CAM” technique. No matter which technique you choose, the crown is going to be e.max®️.  Depending on the technique, either E.MAX®️ PRESS ingot  or E.MAX®️ CAD ingot is used. Both e.max®️ press or e.max®️ CAD ingots are lithium disilicate glass-ceramic.CAD/CAM technology makes it possible to get a crown in a single sitting.

How is it different from the regular zirconium crown?

The main factors that differentiate a zirconium porcelain crown from e-max®️ are strength and aesthetics. As mentioned above, e-max®️ crowns are made from a tough material called lithium disilicate and from a single block. Which means the crown has monolithic structure and thus, they are better equipped to withstand pressure than the zirconium crowns. Hence, there is a less chance of chipping or the crown breaking. Another advantage that an e.max®️ crown has over zirconium is its translucency. The crown colour can match exactly the colour of the teeth adjacent to where the crown will be placed. The range of shades available for an e.max® crown is more as compared to a zirconium crown. This drastically increases the chances of an exact colour match comparted to the zirconium crown.

Since front teeth are the most visible ones, they need crowns that exactly match the adjacent tooth colour. But in the posterior teeth or back teeth, especially in cases of a bridge, all ceramic crowns, be it zirconium or e.max®️, should be avoided. These areas should be restored with metal ceramic crowns for better strength.

E.max® crowns are more expensive as compared to a zirconium crown and even more than a basic metal ceramic crown. It is the most common factor with the majority of people which deters them from opting for an e.max.

E.max® and zirconium porcelain crowns are both metal-free dental crowns. However, each embodies unique characteristics that make them suitable for use interchangeably for different occasions. Both are also relatively new materials, unlike metal porcelain crowns, which has been in use for over years. Even dentists may have trouble choosing between the two. Your choice between e.max and zirconium porcelain should depend on your dental condition and dentist’s recommendation.
