Zirconium porcelain crowns consist of a pure white metal core with porcelain fused to the outside, creating the look of a natural tooth. Zirconium base, that is used for zirconium crown is zirconium dioxide. Cubic zirconia, that is often used as a diamond imitation, is a form of zirconium dioxide. To place a zirconium porcelain crown, the natural tooth structure will first need to be reduced in size and shaped so that a dental crown can fit securely over the affected tooth. Zirconium porcelain crowns are tough and long-lasting. Even your gums recede over time, you will never see the grey line at your gingival area when you smile.  The crown will always appear white at the gum line. The tooth has a perfect transparency as the crown is made up from totally white materials. Zirconium porcelain crowns are also a healthy option compared to metal porcelain, as they are biocompatable. As they are metal free crowns, they are not likely to cause allergic reactions and suitable for patients with metal allergies. The translucent nature of this material can transmit the color of adjacent teeth and it is manufactured in a wide variety of shades, making it easy to accurately match the color of the patient’s natural teeth or patients preference.

The look is more aesthetically pleasing when you smile and therefore zirconium porcelain crowns are recommended for your front teeth (8 upper/8 lower or 10 upper/10 lower, depending the number of teeth that are shown along your smile line).

The disadvantages of zirconia crowns are minimal. The extra strength of zirconium crowns has raised some concerns about friction against the tooth root and wearing down opposing teeth. Frequent check-ups, however, help to reduce the possibility of damaging neighboring teeth. It is not recommended in the back area where long gaps with no teeth would increase the possibility of cracks.
